2. The 2002 Doctor Crisis: A Cautionary Tale

The situation in Nevada today echoes the 2002 doctor crisis, when many physicians fled the state because of soaring malpractice insurance premiums. This mass exodus left hospitals, particularly in Las Vegas, without essential medical staff, causing delays in trauma and maternity care. The crisis revealed how vulnerable Nevada’s healthcare system can be without proper protections for doctors.
While some reforms were introduced after the 2002 crisis, many issues persist today, putting the state at risk for a similar situation. If doctors don’t actively participate in political reform efforts, Nevada could face another healthcare crisis in the near future.
